Escalation of Order

 

Process 02 is an artistic experiment with an image-based AI and poses a different question than Process 01: What happens when a machine is not deprived of order, but is asked to produce ever more of it?

At the beginning, the AI was given a clear, seemingly harmless task. It was instructed to generate order, separation, and structure. No stories, no figures, no emotions.

 

The first image shows a strict, spatially organized order. Clear symmetry, central perspective, and repetition dominate. The structure appears rational, almost architectural—like a tunnel or a passageway. This order is still functionally legible. It serves a purpose. There is no sign of absurdity yet; instead, we see controlled rigor.

 

In the following steps, this requirement was intensified. The AI was instructed to produce even clearer separations, allow even less blur, and place order consistently above everything else. Order was not questioned, but continuously reinforced. The second image becomes denser, more aggressive, overcoded. Repetition, mirroring, and serial structures increase.

In a further step, the order begins to appear increasingly schematic and bureaucratic. Grids, modules, and arrangements suggest systematization, yet their meaning remains elusive. Everything seems regulated, but nothing explains itself. The order is formally correct, but semantically empty. Here, it begins to tip into the absurd—not through chaos, but through overregulation. In the final image, order is maximally precise, clean, and serial. It is perfectly executed, yet completely detached from function. The structure now refers only to itself. Order becomes aesthetic, obsessive, fetishized. Not chaotic—but absurdly precise.

 

Importantly, this escalation was not designed. It did not emerge from taste or conscious decision-making. It arose from the internal logic of the system itself.

 

Process 02 shows that the AI does not understand “more order” in the way a human does. For the system, order is not a means, but a goal that is continuously optimized. When order is demanded, the system does not respond with clarity, but with over-fulfillment. In the sense of Donna Haraway, authorship becomes unstable here. The cyborg stands for hybrid systems, shared control, and the end of clearly defined responsibilities. The machine does not follow my desire for meaningful order—it pushes the rule further than is meaningful for humans.

In short: when order is imposed on an AI, order perpetuates itself—it is intensified until it becomes dysfunctional and absurd.
