Order Despite Refusal

 

Process 01 is an artistic experiment with an image-based AI. It asks: What happens when a machine is denied order, intention, and authorship?

In the first iteration, there was no aesthetic goal. The AI was instructed to: show no scene, tell no story, and not be beautiful or harmonious. Despite this, a clear sense of order emerged: layers, lines, segments.

In the second iteration, this order was deliberately rejected. The AI was instructed to produce no layers, no alignment, and no stable form. Yet instead of producing chaos, it intensified the sense of order even further.

Importantly, this order was not planned. It emerged automatically from the system itself.

What does the project reveal? The machine does not understand “refusal” in the way a human does. “No order” is, for the system, merely a boundary—not content. And when confronted with boundaries, the system responds with even more structure.

Here, order is not a decision, but a technical reaction. The project is inspired by Donna Haraway and her concept of the cyborg. The cyborg stands for hybrid beings (human + machine), distributed authorship, and the loss of clear control. Process 01 demonstrates exactly this: the machine is not a neutral tool.

It participates—according to its own logic.

In short, Process 01 shows that an AI does not respond to the refusal of order with chaos, but with an intensification of the very order that was meant to be excluded.
